ENVIRONMENTAL RULE OF LAW
SDG16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, facilitates the creation of effective and transparent legal frameworks for a fairer and more balanced society, more prepared to cope with future challenges.
ICEL, building upon the Stockholm (1972) and Rio (1992) Declarations, is fully committed with SDG16, and is aware of its interconnection with the other goals and its importance for building a fairer and more balanced society.
ICEL has been at the forefront of the development and advancement of the concept of the environmental rule of law, which will continue.
A definition of the environmental rule of law, and an update on how it is progressing, can be found in the UN Environment Programme publication ‘Environmental Rule of Law: Tracking Progress and Charting Future Directions’ of 2023.
ICEL was proud to cosponsor the ‘Symposium Emerging Issues in Environmental Rule of Law’ in 2024.
