WORLD LAW CONGRESS, NEW YORK, 20-21 JULY 2023

The WORLD LAW CONGRESS 28th edition, organised by the World Jurist Association (WJA), was held in NEW YORK in 2023 as a two-day event. On the first day,  July 20, a series of simultaneous round tables took take place at the New York State Bar Association headquarters, gathering around 300 panelists from around the world, to discuss current topics focusing on Peace Through Law, the original WJA motto. The Closing Ceremony was held on July 21, 2023, at the main building of the UN. During this ceremony, the World Peace & Liberty Award 2023 was bestowed to the European Commission and presented to its President, Ursula von der Leyen.

ICEL was invited to organize a panel. This panel was entitled Making Peace with Nature and Making Nature a Key For Peace (Panel 8). It was chaired by Montserrat Abad Castelos, Professor of Public International Law at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Spain; Vice-Chancellor of ICEL and Co-Director of its International Secretariat, and integrated by the following speakers:

  • Daniel Zavala Porras (Costa Rica)
    Minister-Counsellor of the Costa Rica Permanent Mission to the UN, New York.
  • Victor Tafur (Colombia): Chief Administrative Officer of ICEL and UN Representative in NY; Adjunct Professor at Pace University; Founder Partner of Tafur Domínguez Law Firm.
  • Teresa Parejo (Spain):
    Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility Director, IBERIA; Co-director of the ICEL’s International Secretariat.
  • Kevin Chand (Vanuatu):
    Legal Adviser, Permanent Mission of Vanuatu to the United Nations, New York.
  • Scott Mahoney (USA):
    General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Avangrid.
